This voyage combines Road Scholar’s trademark education and camaraderie with access to Holland America Cruise Line’s wide variety of activities and dining and entertainment options. While you’ll spend much of your time with the Road Scholar group, please consider that you’ll be on a large ocean liner with passengers of all ages when deciding if this program is right for you.

Steve Schmich is a retired teacher who is passionate about sharing his great love for the outdoors with others. During his teaching career, he taught health, physical education, and outdoor education. Steve has specific interests in aquatic ecology and geology.

Easy Going You know what moves me? Exercising my mind. Let’s keep walking to a minimum and avoid stairs when we can.

On Your Feet I’m comfortable with some walking throughout the day. I expect to get on and off of a coach, and I’m ready to stroll through cities and to stand for a few hours when we’re learning in museums.

Keep the Pace I like to spend much of the day exploring. Whether walking through historic neighborhoods at a moderate pace or out and about on a coach, I prefer to keep my days full. Stairs don’t bother me, and I love to keep up with the group.

Let's Go! Walking is the best way to get to know a new place. I’m energetic and enjoy a good physical challenge, so I’m always ready to spend the day on the move. Whether it’s public transit, city streets or village cobblestones, I’m game.

Choose Your Pace Choose from two or more options of activity levels to find your perfect pace.

Outdoor: No Sweat I exercise for fun, not to win contests. I like to explore at an easy pace, stopping to snap photos and smell the roses. Varied terrain doesn’t scare me, but let’s not do anything too extreme.

Outdoor: Spirited I enjoy getting my heart going on my bike or on trails. Nothing beats the thrill of taking on a rewarding climb or ride on varied terrain with inclines. Let’s keep moving — occasional stops only, please.

Outdoor: Challenging I love pushing myself, and I can keep a steady pace on rugged and steep terrain. This is as challenging as it gets? Great. Let’s do this. At the end of the day, I want to feel like I’ve had a real workout.

Outdoor: Choose Your Pace As outdoor enthusiasts know, some days can bring new variables — the weather, the terrain, my energy level — so I enjoy the flexibility of choosing from multiple options of length, challenges and pace
